CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

“Positions, everyone,” Lincoln shouted from across the yard. From everywhere, people scrambled for their weapons and to reach their assigned defensive stations. “Hold. Hold everyone. It’s just a column from the National Guard base.”

Mark approached. “Did you say column?”

“Yes.”

“How many vehicles in the column?”

Lincoln repeated the question into the radio. “Six.”

“Six? Why such a large group if he’s just coming for a visit?”

Lincoln spoke into the radio. “They already let them pass. Is there a problem?”

“I’m not sure. Call the eastern and southern trucks to the intersection. Keep everyone else in position.”

While Lincoln spread the word, Mark thought back to his conversation with West a few days ago. Had the man reached out and contacted the other group? But West knew him. He should know better than to believe whatever they told him. This was pure speculation. There had to be another purpose for such a strong show of force. Perhaps another threat was out there they were unaware of yet.

The column came in slow. Two troop-carrying trucks came straight and braked near the side of the house beyond the pine trees. A tactical vehicle with a mounted fifty cal stopped along the front street, its gun swiveled in their direction. Another troop carrier pulled up in the driveway behind West’s jeep, which also had a mounted gun, and like the first one was pointed at them.

Lincoln said, “I don’t like the looks of this.”

“Call in the other two trucks and have them target the troop carriers.” Mark walked past Lincoln and plastered on a welcoming smile.

West exited the jeep and walked forward. He too put a smile on but was unable to keep it in place. Mark extended his hand in greeting but noted West kept his at his side near his sidearm.

While still a few strides away, Mark said, “General, to what do we owe the honor of this unexpected visit?”

The general was in the process of pulling his gun when he heard the engine. His smile fell away, and he glanced over his shoulder. One of Mark’s trucks stopped ten yards from its counterpart.

West spun back, his face reddening. “What’s that?”

Mark stepped forward and stopped inches from West’s face. The man backed up. “No, General, what’s this?” He swept his hand at the two threatening machine guns. “You come here with a show of force. To do what? Are we enemies now?”

The driver of his jeep hopped out and walked toward the general with glances over his shoulder. He whispered something to the general then backed up a step. West’s face was lined with concern.

Mark turned and spoke to Lincoln. “If any of the general’s troops get out of their trucks and look threatening at any of our people, tell the gunners to open fire.”

“Wh-what?” West stammered. “You can’t do that.”

“I’m responding to a hostile threat. We’ve had quite a few of those in recent days. We’re getting very good at defending against them. And you know what? They were all wearing uniforms.”

“What are you talking about?” West said, his voice full of rage.
